Quezon City, the largest city leading climate action in the Philippines, will host this year’s Earth Hour celebration on March 25, in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature – Philippines (WWF-Philippines).

Over 7,000 cities from 193 countries are expected to participate in the celebration of Earth Hour which is considered as one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental movements.

Mayor Joy Belmonte expressed her commitment to climate justice, stating that local government units such as Quezon City have a big role to play in raising awareness about the threats of climate change among constituents. She added that the city’s environmental programs and initiatives are inclusive and responsive to the needs of its people.

On March 25, the city government will switch off the lights of the pylon in Quezon Memorial Circle and other city government-run buildings for an hour, starting at 8:30 PM. Citizens and business owners are encouraged to switch off non-essential lights during the activity.

Mayor Belmonte stressed that the city’s participation in Earth Hour highlights its determination to push for climate justice and advance inclusive, ambitious, and evidence-based climate action toward a livable and quality community for all.

This year’s celebration of Earth Hour emphasizes the significance of taking action and making a difference in reducing the impacts of climate change.

Quezon City has a longstanding partnership with WWF-Philippines and Earth Hour, having hosted the event in 2015.

The city was also recognized as a finalist in the One Planet Cities Challenge last year for its climate actions and alignment with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting climate change to 1.5 °C.
