The Kahimunan Festival, Butuan City’s vibrant celebration of the Santo Niño feast kicks off today, January 12, in Barangay Libertad.

The local government expects a larger crowd this year, eager to witness the festival’s colorful street dancing, cultural shows, and religious activities.

The week-long festivities include a novena Mass, barangay night, a beauty pageant, an acrobatic show, and the coronation of the Muyta Hong Libertad.

The Department of Tourism-13 (Caraga), the Santo Nino Shrine, the Diocese of Butuan, and city officials are all supporting the event.

To ensure the safety of festivalgoers, the Butuan City Police Office will be deploying personnel throughout the week.

The Kahimunan Festival, inspired by Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival, is a tribute to the city’s patron saint, the Santo Niño. Its name, “kahimunan,” is a Lumad term meaning “gathering,” reflecting the festival’s role in bringing people together to celebrate faith, culture, and community.
