In a groundbreaking move, the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park in Sibulan, Negros Oriental has become the first protected area in the Philippines to offer free wireless internet access.

The initiative, a collaboration between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI), and the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), aims to enhance tourism in the region.

The introduction of free WiFi is expected to not only attract more visitors to the park but also bolster the income of the Twin Lakes Farmers’ Association (BTLFA), consisting of 50 households and over 200 individuals. BTLFA provides essential services within the park, including boating and tour guiding.

Additionally, the free internet connectivity is seen as a significant advancement for the DENR’s Protected Area Management Board-Protected Area Management Office (PAMB-PAMO), enabling real-time reporting and updates to enhance tourist engagement. NOCCI’s involvement extends beyond this project, as they have already facilitated the installation of free WiFi in 42 remote schools and barangay halls across the province.
