Eastern Samar towns join forces to celebrate the Month of the Ocean by conducting a simultaneous three-day clean-up drive starting on May 9, 2023.

IIn partnership with neighboring municipalities, the local government has initiated the campaign to clean up various diving sites in Eastern Samar province.

According to Mayor Javier Zacate, the inspiration behind the drive was the pandemic-induced quarantine restrictions that forced people to explore and appreciate their local natural resources.

The local government is keenly aware of the effects of climate change, including the disturbance in the Pacific Patch – large garbage patches in the ocean that consist of litter, fishing gear, and other marine debris.

The alarming presence of microfibers in the ocean has also caused concern, spearheading the initiative to decrease the use of single-use plastics and encouraging women’s organizations to weave “bayongs” to be used for buying essentials.

The project has received support from the Eastern Samar Governor, who emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about the need to care for the environment despite the province’s geographical challenges.

The Month of the Ocean drive serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet for the future generation, especially during these uncertain times.
