President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has reiterated his call for the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to prioritize the upskilling and reskilling of Filipino seafarers.

Speaking at the summit conference “Shaping the Future of Shipping: Seafarer 2050” held at Conrad Manila, President Marcos emphasized the need for the shipping industry to adapt to new developments and integrate them into their fleets.

He highlighted the importance of retooling existing ships and constructing modern vessels equipped with sustainable fuels and digitalization.

Marcos also stressed the necessity of investing in a highly qualified and well-trained workforce to operate and maintain these ships.

The CHED, in coordination with maritime schools, has committed to implementing reforms proposed by the European Union (EU) to ensure the continued employment of Filipino seafarers on foreign vessels.

In March, the European Commission declared its ongoing recognition of seafarer certificates issued by the Philippines.

President Marcos affirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening maritime-related policies and safeguarding the welfare of seafarers and their families.
