On Sunday, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said that the Philippines should inform the United Nations (UN) about China’s repeated violations of a 2016 court ruling regarding the South China Sea.

He suggests providing evidence of China’s encroachments and violations, such as reclaiming territories within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone and impeding freedom of navigation.

Former Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza proposed a similar idea but expressed concern about China’s veto powers in the UN Security Council.

Additionally, Jardeleza mentioned the possibility of filing a separate case against China for damages in the West Philippine Sea.

Jardeleza also proposed the idea of the Philippines pursuing a distinct legal case against China to claim compensation for the damages caused in the West Philippine Sea.

Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra mentioned that a specialized team of state solicitors would be assigned to examine this matter.

Despite winning the legal battle in 2016, China continues to ignore the ruling and engage in incursions.

In response, the Philippine Coast Guard has been reporting these incidents to deter Chinese aggression, while the military has deployed additional assets to conduct sovereignty patrols in the disputed waters.
