Philippine President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. said that his recent meetings with top United States officials were an “attractive opportunity” for the country to strengthen its ties with the powerful nation amid rising tensions in Asia.

President Marcos expressed his concern about China’s continued provocations in the South China Sea, stating that it was one of the major issues faced by the Philippines.

He added that building cooperation with the US, the Philippines’ sole treaty partner, was a natural response to the geopolitical complexities of the region.

When asked about his meetings’ impact on protecting the region, Marcos noted that the Philippines is building its relationship with the US, known for being a military and economic powerhouse.

In response, Biden reassured the Philippine president of America’s “ironclad commitment” to defend the country in any armed attack.

Aside from discussions on security, the meetings also resulted in business deals on e-motorcycles and nuclear power. Marcos noted that this is a great opportunity for the Philippines to strengthen its infrastructure and contribute to a cleaner environment.

The Philippine president expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to work with the US to address the issues in the region and to build a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable world.

He also mentioned the need to continue looking for opportunities to enhance cooperation and address the complex geopolitical issues that the world is facing.
