On July 14, 2023, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. officially opened the first phase of the Samar Pacific Coastal Road (SPCR) project in Northern Samar.

Funded by the South Korean government through the Export-Import Bank of Korea, the project involved the construction of 11.6 kilometers of road and three bridges. It will particularly benefit the communities of Lapainig, Gamay, Mapanas, and Palapag.

The road, constructed with funding from South Korea, aims to improve transportation and drive development in the region.

President Marcos personally inspected a section of the road in Palapag town and expressed his optimism about the positive impact the road will have on Northern Samar’s agriculture emphasizing that it will enhance the movement of goods and services, ultimately improving the lives of the residents.

The President underscored the government’s commitment to addressing insurgency in the province and ensuring that economic growth and essential services reach all the people.

The completion of the PHP1.12 billion SPCR project phase 1 demonstrates South Korea’s dedication as a development partner for the Philippines.

The newly opened road is expected to boost agricultural activities for thousands of farmers, supporting the provincial government’s food self-sufficiency program.

It is also anticipated to stimulate tourism and strengthen overall peace and resilience throughout the province.
